Territory and geographical features
Territorially Ukraine is the largest country in Europe with the area of 603.5 thousand sq. km. The Ukrainian national emblem is a golden Trident (tryzoob). The territory of Ukraine is comprised mainly of flatlands with the exception of Carpathian Mountains to the west, (Hoverla, the highest peak 2081m above sea level) and the Crimean Mountains to the south (Mount Roman Kosh 1545m above sea level). The largest rivers of Ukraine are the Dnipro, Dnister and Pivdennyy Buh.


Climate

The climate is moderately continental and comparatively dry with more than 290 sunny days in the year in the South Ukraine (Black Sea coast, Crimea). 
Average winter temperature: from -8° to -15° C Falling snow and -10° C is a really rare occurrence, which is usually replaced by a thaw.
Average summer temperature: from +18° to +25° C, though in daytime can get up over +35° C.


Population
The population of Ukraine is 46 million and is comprised mainly of Ukrainians as an ethnic group. Other ethnic groups residing in Ukraine include: Russians, Byelorussians, Jews, Poles, Tatars, Germans, Greeks, etc. The largest city in Ukraine is Kyiv. The largest cities are the industrial centers of Kharkiv, Donetsk, Dnipropetrovsk, Zaporizhia, Odessa and Lviv.


Religion
Christianity is the leading religion in the country with the most residents being of the Orthodox and Greek Catholic denomination.


Languages
The official language of Ukraine is Ukrainian. Many Ukrainians are bilingual and speak Russian as well. The latter is used more widely in the Crimea, Odessa, Kharkiv, Donetsk and Dnipropetrovsk regions. Among foreign languages the most popular is English, though it is not possible to guarantee that you would meet plenty of Ukrainians speaking English fluently.


Local currency
The national currency of Ukraine is Hryvnia. Currency exchange points where one may convert USD, Euro or Russian rubles are located almost in all cities.

Local time is Greenwich Mean Time plus two hours. Daylight savings time is observed from the last Sunday in March to the last Sunday in October.

Gratuities (tips)

Personnel of hotels, restaurants, guides in Ukraine expect tips as in any other country. The tips amount depends on your satisfaction and the total of provided services. Customary tips are about 10% of the order amount at restaurants, bars, etc.
